Gap Analysis

Challenge 1: Conduct Gap Analysis

Artifact: Design Document 1 developed for EDCI 572: Learning Systems Design (Fall 2025).

Reflection: As part of EDCI 572: Learning Systems Design, I developed a design document for an AAC communication partner workshop that began with a systematic gap analysis. I compared the desired performance of communication partners supporting adults who use AAC with the actual challenges they experience after receiving a speech-generating device. This analysis guided the instructional goal, learning objectives, and overall design of the workshop. Completing this project strengthened my ability to identify learning needs, distinguish instructional problems from performance gaps, and use evidence to support instructional design decisions.

Target Population and Environment

Challenge 2: Determine Characteristics of Target Population & Environment

Artifact: Final Design Document developed for EDCI 572: Learning Systems Design (Fall 2025).

Reflection: As part of EDCI 572: Learning Systems Design (Fall 2025), I expanded my initial design document by conducting a detailed learner and instructional context analysis for an AAC communication partner workshop. The project examined learner characteristics, prior knowledge, learning preferences, instructional settings, available resources, and environmental factors that could influence learning and performance. These analyses guided the development of performance objectives, instructional strategies, assessments, and implementation plans tailored to the needs of the target audience. This project strengthened my ability to analyze learner and environmental characteristics to support effective, learner-centered instructional design.

Challenge 3: Determine subordinate and prerequisite skills and knowledge.

Artifact: Final Design Document developed for EDCI 572: Learning Systems Design (Fall 2025).

Reflection: As part of EDCI 572: Learning Systems Design (Fall 2025), I developed a comprehensive instructional design document for an AAC communication partner workshop. The final design document identified the prerequisite knowledge, learner skills, performance objectives, and instructional sequence needed before learners could successfully complete the workshop. Organizing objectives into a logical progression ensured that foundational knowledge was established before introducing more complex concepts and instructional activities. This project strengthened my ability to analyze prerequisite skills, sequence learning objectives, and design instruction that supports progressive skill development.

Challenge 4:  Use appropriate techniques to analyze various types and sources to validate content.

Artifact: Learning Theorists Family Tree developed for EDCI 531: Learning Theory and Instructional Design (Spring 2026).

Reflection: As part of EDCI 531: Learning Theory and Instructional Design (Spring 2026), I created a Learning Theorists Family Tree that traced the historical development of major learning theories and the relationships among influential theorists. Developing this project required extensive review of scholarly literature, comparison of multiple academic sources, and validation of historical and theoretical information using peer-reviewed research and reputable educational references. This project strengthened my ability to critically evaluate sources, synthesize information from multiple references, and validate instructional content before applying it to instructional design decisions.

Analyze Technologies

AI technology _edited_edited.jpg

Challenge 5: Analyze the characteristics of existing and emerging technologies and their potential use.

Artifact: Discussion post developed for EDCI 513: Foundations of Learning Design and Technology: An Introduction to the Field (Fall 2025).

Reflection: As part of EDCI 513: Foundations of Learning Design and Technology: An Introduction to the Field (Fall 2025), I evaluated the ARCHED (AI Human-Centered Framework for Transparent, Responsible, and Collaborative AI-Assisted Instructional Design) framework, an emerging approach for integrating artificial intelligence into instructional design. I reviewed current scholarly literature, analyzed the framework's guiding principles, and reflected on how AI can enhance instructional design while maintaining human oversight, transparency, and ethical decision-making. This task strengthened my ability to critically evaluate emerging technologies, assess their instructional applications, and recognize both the benefits and limitations of AI in learning design.
